How Infrared Thermography Work to Detect Chronic Pain

April Beaman • April 5, 2022

Chronic pain is a struggle for millions of individuals globally, with hundreds of new cases identified every day. Depending on the type of pain, thermography techniques may go a long way toward identifying and validating these symptoms toward providing relief for many individuals. Chronic pains are commonly known and diagnosed by doctors, but the introduction of infrared technology in diagnosing the condition is another phenomenon. Whenever chronic pain happens, there are changes in the affected parts of the body. The heat emitted is the basis of how infrared thermography works.

How does thermography work?

Infrared thermography uses a thermal imager or camera to detect the amount of infrared energy released by the scanned object. The devices scan and see the energy released by an object. It converts it to electronic signals, and the electronic signals are displayed on the screen in correspondence with different energy emissions from the scanned object. The areas affected will emit too much infrared energy, and by closely looking at the heat areas, you can quickly pinpoint the location.

Medical infrared thermography is used to analyze physiological functions related to the human skin. This non-invasive and non-damaging tool detects thermal abnormalities on the skin surface. Injuries that happen often affect the blood flow, affecting the body temperature. The technology is used for detecting neurological disorders, like thrombosis, embolism, and stenosis.

When a swelling, blockage, or clot is formed on any part of the brain, inflammation occurs. This causes temperature variations in the affected regions. Infrared thermal imaging detects these heat variations due to the increase or decrease of blood flow in the affected tissue. It also sees early signs of any neurological disease before it happens through its infrared technology.

In conclusion, infrared technology provides fast body temperature and gives a detailed body temperature distribution during disease diagnosis procedures. Abnormal physiological changes can be detected from the information provided by thermal infrared cameras. Thanks to technological advancement, thermography allows early detection of developing conditions, allowing timely investigations and treatment long before the symptoms manifest. Contact us today, to learn more about thermography.
